RESEARCH

Science on the North Highland Way.

Register your interest in our environmental studies course,

I report to the UK Climate Change Committee on a regular basis. It has been noted it is unlikely that NetZero targets will be met.

I am currently working on the Economics of Renewable Energy with Heriot Watt University and looking at agriculture and the economics thereof on the ongoing theme of meeting NetZero.

However, at least we get a mention in Climate Fringe Festival output.

Teaching Environmental Studies – the bottom up approach, rather than top down.

The first tranche of research into Net Zero can be found in our book “North Highland Way : A Green Vision“. The hypothesis was “Can the North Highland area reach NetZero and still meet its economic demands?”

Energy security and cost is a big issue in the far north of Scotland, so we are researching it now, in conjunction with Heriot Watt University. We publish Environmental News on a quarterly basis.

Food and the disposal of is a real issue at domestic level, so we started a micro project at home.

You can find our some research into NetZero here and on Academia. You can find Past Projects here.

We are developing a courseware, as agreed with Highlands and Islands University. First purchase the books North Highland Way: A Green Vision and Elements of the Environment – Peat. Elements of the Environment – Trees is now published. In conjunction with Green Destinations, this will lead to a certificate as a Green Advisor. “Creating the North Highland Way : A Route to NetZero” is now published on Amazon. “In 2000 a gap in the market for the walking product was identified. There were not even any Ordnance Survey LandRover maps available. The guests at the bed and breakfast at Dunnet Head complained that they could not find their route, that there were no marked routes, and often found themselves in trouble. On Dunnet Head, this was a particular problem due to the haar coming down without notice. It is assumed that other areas had the same problems.” Only Friends of the North Highland Way can see the research as it develops. We worked closely with the Ranger service which then was part of the Highland Council.

There is a survey for accommodation operators. The updated feasibility study and business plan for the Way has not been published in the book as planned, as it now requires and update.

Potential Projects

We have suggested to the Highland Council that they carry out a survey on transport, but this is not possible at the moment. One of the issues is that not all of the public transport is run by the Highland Council.

Current Research

We are currently carrying out a survey – see below.
